Our Science Modules: We will have three major courses of study this year in science: Variations, Energy, and Space.
Variations: Sub-module 1 = Variations in Nature; Sub-module 2 = Passing on Traits; Sub-module 3 = Matter Makes the Difference.
In the Variations in Nature module we will learn about examples and causes of the differences found in nature. This includes classifying animals and plants based on their properties and attributes, learning about evolution’s role in the changing of species over generations, and plant and animal adaptations. We will also be learning about the Rock Cycle and links to fossil records. This is our Earth/Space Science and Life Science Module.
In the Passing on Traits module, we will learn how traits are passed from generation to generation, how genetic information from parents is physically passed, and how diversity is affected by sexual and asexual reproduction. This is also a Life Science Module.
In the Matter Makes the Difference module, we will learn how the structure and organization of matter gives us variation and what happens when elements combine. This is our chemistry portion and will include balancing chemical equations.
Energy: Sub-module 1 = Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy; Sub-module 2 = The Electrical Connection; Sub-module 3 = Energy Sources; Sub-module 4 = Home Energy Efficiency.
In the Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy Module, we will define energy and learn about how it changes form. We will complete a case study on photosynthesis as it relates to energy conversion. This is a physics, chemistry, and life science module.
In the Electrical Connection module, we will learn about the transfer of energy through electricity. We will explore electric circuitry, magnetic fields, and electric current. This is a physics module.
In the Energy Sources module, we will learn how various energy sources produce electrical energy and their varying environmental impacts. This is a physics and environmental science module.
In the Home Energy Efficiency module, we will learn how the processes of conduction, convection, and radiation influence the energy efficiency of a home as well as exploring efficient methods of conserving energy. This is a physics module.
Space: Sub-module 1 = What to Know Before You Go; Sub-module 2 = Leaving Planet Earth; Sub-module 3 = Surviving in Space.
In the What to Know Before You Go module, we will learn about the patterns and interactions we see in our solar system and how the interaction of the moon, sun, and earth cause day and night, year length, moon phases, eclipses, and seasons. This part is the Earth/Space Science portion of the module. We will also learn about the properties of an EMR wave (electromagnetic radiation) and how the electromagnetic spectrum assists us in studying space. This is the physics portion of this module.
In the Leaving Planet Earth module, we will learn how gravity influences an object’s mass and weight, how the motion of objects can be explained, and how Newton’s laws explain how we leave planet Earth. This is a physics module.
In the Surviving in Space module, we will learn how the human body can survive and work in the harsh environment of space. This is a Life Science module.
